Fondazione Links_Leading Innovation and Knowledge for Society Torino Italy Research and development
Warning! Vacancy expired

Company Description

Host institution/company:

The LINKS Foundation was founded in 2016 exploiting and enhancing the experience gained from the Istituto Superiore Mario Boella (ISMB) and from the Istituto Superiore on Territorial Systems for Innovation (SiTI) in the first 2 decades of the new millennium in the field of research applied and technology transfer, adding a fundamental element such as the enhancement of the research result. As part of the knowledge chain, the Foundation intends to enhance the lever of applied research, contributing to the growth of the socio-economic system by relating the academic world, the public and private sectors, activating large-scale processes and projects with significant impacts on territory. The Foundation intends to establish a dialogue with the local, national and international business entrepreneurship, in order to share and enhance knowledge, experience and innovation. The Foundation is an ideal partner for both SMEs, which can enhance the ability to develop innovation and gain competitiveness using the experience and expertise of the foundation, both of the Large Enterprises that can, in partnership with it, develop new ideas and new technologies.

Position

ESR # 11

Project title: Towards multifunctional multimaterial optical fibres for diagnostic and treatment.

Brief description of the project:
The group of Politecnico di Torino and Fondazione Links has a long-lasting expertise on design, fabrication and characterization of optical glasses and specialty optical fibers. The group has also developed a bioresorbable optical glass that allow to exploit novel applications in therapy and diagnostics by using resorbable/disposable devices that do not need explant after use.
The ESR will work on the development of an optical probe able to combine several functionalities in the field of cancer diagnostic and treatment, thanks also to the integration, directly into the fiber, of materials which are traditionally not used in fiber optics. Functionalities like in-situ drug release, light delivery for treatment (e.g. photodynamic therapy, photothermal therapy), electrical signal transport (e.g. RF ablation and sensing) and diagnostics (e.g. time-domain diffuse optical spectroscopy) are foreseen. The endoscope will integrate also sensing and monitoring functions that could assist during therapy and after treatment.
Planned secondments at Spectracure AB (Sweden), Leibniz Institute of Photonic Technology (Germany), Hemophotonics SL (Spain), ICFO (Spain).
