Junior Researcher or Post-Doc Researcher on secure Internet-of-Things Systems

Istituto Superiore Mario Boella Torino Italy Research and development
Warning! Vacancy expired

Company Description

Istituto Superiore Mario Boella (ISMB) is a research and innovation centre operating in the Information and Communication Technologies (ICT) domain. Founded in 2000 by Compagnia di San Paolo and Politecnico di Torino, today ISMB relies on the technological and process competences of around 150 researchers working in close cooperation with companies, academia and public administration. ISMB operates according to the knowledge management model: this means that it plays an active role not only in devising innovative solutions, but also in their implementation and consequent developments. This approach represents a step forward with respect to technology transfer, and in this sense the evolutionary lines of European research are taken into account.

Position

The Pervasive Technologies (PerT) Research Area develops enabling technologies for the emerging Internet of Things (IoT) paradigm in many applied international research projects. IoT is currently considered by most world-wide large industrial players one of the most promising and trending technology visions – and it is rapidly transforming the way many products and services are delivered. The main challenges at the core of the concept are to enrich objects with communication capabilities and an electronic identity, turning them into a source of information, part of a global, distributed network. As a result, processes can be better managed and optimized.

The role suits candidates with a background in IoT systems and data management, considering aspects such as security, privacy, trust, access control & policy, provenance & audit, ideally in a distributed environment. Familiarity with machine learning is a bonus. The work entails a practical and experimental approach, which means strong SW programming skills are required. Main activities will be framed in the context of European initiatives concerning solutions combining IoT technologies and Cyber-Physical Systems in different contexts including industrial automation, infrastructure monitoring and robotics.

In the short term, the selected candidate will be involved in agile research teams performing analysis, design and development activities mostly adopting and extending open software solutions, in different application scenarios. In the medium-long term, the selected candidate will also be required to grow his/her competences on best design/development patterns, agile development, open standards and solutions for Cyber Security in IoT, also contributing to open-source initiatives.

Requirements

  • MSc degree in Computer Science, Computer Engineering or equivalent.
  • knowledge of Cyber Security and Privacy.
  • good proficiency in possibly different programming languages (e.g. Java, Python, C++, Javascript) and strong interest in learning new languages and software tools.
  • knowledge of best practices in software development.
  • knowledge of basic team-oriented development processes and development-support tools (e.g. for versioning, testing, etc.).
  • creative, proactive attitude joint with interest in working on development of innovative solutions.
  • good English level and ability to work both individually and actively join and interact with international, possibly distributed teams.

One or more of the following is considered a plus:

  • PhD title in topics related to Computer Science and Control Engineering as well as Communications Engineering;
  • knowledge of machine learning techniques;
  • deep knowledge of open source technologies and proficient use of Linux and open-source tools;
  • experience in programming software for distributed environments;
  • experience in the use of one or more of the OSGi framework implementations (Felix, Equinox, Knopflerfish..).
